How to make Tool-Assisted Speedruns[SNES Tutorial] - 2007/02/26 02:39 First you need to Download the Snes9x Emulator with re-record implemented.
We will start with the SNES emulator, because is very easy to use and have good games to be TASed.

First Step - Configuring the emulator

Configure the graphics like you wants in Options > Display Configuration.

Configure your Controls like you wants in Input > Joypad Configuration.

Now configure the Hotkeys, the basic keys for a TAS are Frame Advance, Show Pressed Keys and Movie Frame Count.
Configure them like you want in Input > Customize Hotkeys.

Second Step - Recording the movie

Load the game in File > Load Game, I will use Super Mario World for the example.

Now Pause the emulator with the Pause Key on your Keyboard.
Go to File > Movie Record.

Movie File - Where to save your file, choose where you want.
Record Options - From where start to record your movie, leave Record from Reset checked.
Record Controllers - How much controllers inputs will have in the movie, leave Joypad 1 checked.
Emulator Sync Settings - Options to make the movie not Desync during the Playback, leave WIP1 Timing checked.

Good...all things configured, press OK and let's start the movie !!
With the emulator paused, active the Show pressed keys and Movie frame count.
Make a Savestate with Holding Shift and pressing the slot that you want, from F1 to F10, each number correspond a Slot.
You can advance the frames with the key that you configured before, to make a certain movement in a certain frame, you need to hold the button that you want for this frame and advance the frame.
Now advance the frames until the beginning of the first stage.

In the first stage, run (Holding Y+Right and advancing the frames) at maximum velocity and jump (pressing B and advancing the frame), in the top of the jump make a savestate.

Now keep advancing the frames and try to jump at the first possible frame when the Mario touch the ground.
Look in the image, Mario touch the ground at the frame 2043.

Now Load (pressing F1 to F10, without holding Shift) the savestate that you saved before in top of the jump.
Super Mario World (SNES) have a 4 frames lag in Inputs, you will need to calculate the lag to jump at the first possible frame, 2043-4=2039, we need to jump in the frame 2039.
Advance the frames and stop at the frame 2039, Hold the B button and advance the frame, look Mario jumping without exit your maximum velocity jump position.

Now finish the stage jumping like a frog, ALWAYS in the first frame.
Go making Savestates, if you miss the correct frame, you can Load and try again.
The amount of frames that you hold the jump button and advance the frames will correspond the height that you will jump.
After the stage is finished, you can stop to record the movie in File > Movie Stop.
ALWAYS make a savestate before stop the movie.

Third Step - Resuming the recording of the movie

To resume a recording, go to File > Movie Play and choose your movie file.
Uncheck Read-Only and press OK.
When you want to resume the record, Load your savestate that you want to resume your movie.

Finished the tutorial !!!

You can download the Movie that I recorded making this tutorial.

Ok. I have a problem here: Hold the B button and advance the frame, look Mario jumping without exit your maximum velocity jump position.
Is Mario supposed to keep jumping with me just holding the jump button? If so, I've gotta problem

Re:How to make a Tool-Assisted Speedrun [Tutorial] - 2007/04/19 10:25 No...
You need to hold the Jump button when advance the frame...only 1 frame...

Hold the jump button and press frame advance...release jump button and keep advancing frames...Mario will jump...to do a High jump you need to hold the jump button and advancing the frames, when he reachs the jump as you want, you can release the jump...
